What's a Meme

Last week Meme’s hit UT…and hard! Within one day this facebook group got over 5,000 likes and was boosting in meme’s with a UT theme. It’s pretty cool seeing how something can take off so fast and with so many participants. It’s even more awesome to see how everyone at UT can connect with these meme’s. It show’s that we’re all linked just by what school we all attend. Some of them are pretty funny too. Granted, in the beginning I didn’t understand what a meme was and was a bit confused, from the awkward penguin to good guy stan.

So what is a meme?

A Meme is “An element of a culture or behavior that may be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, esp. imitation”

I really wonder how long this meme thing is gonna last and what more it’s gonna lead to

Car Insurance

So, recently i’ve gotten into the habit of turning on the T.V when I wake up and leaving it on while i get ready for class and make breakfast. This morning it occurred to me how many car insurance commercials are out there. During every show break there is a “new” car commercial and then every other break there is a commercial for car insurance. I literally heard at least 6 car insurance commercials before i got to my noon class. I even heard a couple on Pandora during my walk to class. Now the thing with insurance commercials is that everyone know the top company’s: Geico, State Farm, Progressive etc. etc.. I think it is quite entertaining how they more “blatantly” call out the competition more recently. Except for Geico, I mean what is this lizard gecko doing walking around a bar and dancing the two-step. This is what i’ve decifered, Progressive attacks state farm -> State Farm attacks Geico —> and Geico does their own thing. Now, Flo has just started to annoy me and I think the only one’s that i’m actually liking are the State Farms ones that subtly call out Geico through referencing the 15 minute could save you money line.

Innovation

Ohh the day’s when “lines” are no more. Standing in line at Starbucks the other day I began to think about check-out lines. Self-check out lines have been popping up in all types of places from grocery stores and the like, just recently I walked into CVS and noticed that they had installed 3 new self check out lanes. I’m just waiting for the day when Starbucks has a self-checkout lane. You would just walk up to the counter and touchscreen yourself what drink you wanted. At least have one in conjunction with a regular Barista so that you are not stuck behind the indecisive people who stand there pondering what they want for what feels like hours (especially if you’re in a rush to class). This would solve a lot of issues for people who know what they want and don’t need any food items to go along with their order. They could just pay for their simple drink and be on their merry way.

Past-Present-Future
I have been thinking about mirrors recently. I was going to attempt to draw an abstract sketch of how a mirror is just reality… I kept thinking and came up with this. Hopefully it’s self explanatory. I really tried to get to show that my past is behind me and in the shadows, while I am currently studying and looking forward and seeing my (more nearer) future.. I tried to get the emotions out in the faces, especially with the present time me have a little red on my cheeks to hopefully show stress and tire (come to think of it i really should have drawn dark circles around the eyes)

I was trying to snap a picture in the park to try and display a rainy day as not being gloomy but instead got this, I would say a more interesting photo. We were at Dolores park in San Francisco’s mission district. At this park on any given weekend people swarm to just take in the sun and really just be social with complete strangers. You’ve got a dance party going on in one corner of the park, vendors walking around selling treats and peoples dogs running around. This picture intrigues me because it is as if the skies have opened for this one guy. In the midst of this chaotic storm (of people gathering) this one man is somehow peacefully settled in the eye of the storm and taking it all in.
